Based on the principle of oxygenated hemoglobin having a higher absorption coefficient for infrared light than deoxygenated hemoglobin while deoxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more red light, by taking the ratio of absorbed red light to infrared light, the oxygen saturation level can be obtained.
